For obvious reasons, many of us consider our phone number as being quite a personal thing about us, whether we’re giving it to a potential ‘date’ or as a means to confirm our identity when creating an online account.
However, many phone numbers don’t actually belong to real people, either because they have an innocent use such as a connected machine that uses the mobile data network, or more insidiously they as part of industrial ‘farms’ that bombard the telephony users everywhere with bogus or malicious traffic.
But, how do you tell the difference, given outwardly there is little or nothing to differentiate between the two?
At TMT ID we see this as a key part of our mission statement and are always on the lookout for intelligence that furthers that aim. It’s a data attribute that shows whether a supplied telephone number is associated with an account on approximately 15 of the world’s most popular business and social platforms.
Why is this important? In certain countries, wouldn’t you naturally expect that a number that belongs to a real person be present in certain places? ‘Normal’ people tend to do ‘normal’ things and having that intelligence can create a powerful risk signal, both positively or negatively. What’s more, when you consider that many of these platforms will also actively verify a phone number that’s registered against an account, Online Presence provides even more endorsement that helps your risk engines and decisioning processes.
